Frequently Asked Questions
Answers for You
How old do you have to be to carry a handgun in Oklahoma
According to the Constitutional Carry law - you must be 21 unless you are in the military then it's 18. To apply for a Oklahoma SDA permit you must be 21.
If Oklahoma is a Constitutional Carry State, why would I very need an SDA permit?
If you plan to carry your weapon outside of Oklahoma you would want to consider a SDA permit - most (but not all) states have reciprocity agreements to honor Oklahoma's SDA permit.
Where am I unable to carry my weapon?
Government buildings, sporting areas during events, businesses that have posted no handgun signs, colleges, universities, technology centers, anywhere gambling is allowed, courthouses or where prisoners are kept, and private or public elementary or secondary schools.
What should I do if I get contacted by the police and I have a weapon on me?
If you have a SDA permit you must immediately inform the officer that you have a weapon. If you are carrying under the Constitutional Carry you must tell the officer if they ask. Either way, stay calm, keep your hands where the officer can see them and DO NOT reach for the weapon.
What if I don't have a handgun yet? Or I want to try a different handgun.
We have several different handguns available for rent for a $15 fee. Handgun rental includes a holster and extra magazine. Handguns available are Kimber .45, Glock .40, Glock 9mm, Sig 9mm and Walther .22. Two of the handguns are equipped with red dot sights.
Ammunition is hard to get and/or very expensive right now, what can I do?
Although we highly recommend taking the class with the handgun you carry we realize sometimes ammunition is hard to come by. Consider using a .22 handgun to take the class - .22 ammunition is much less expensive and usually easier to come by.
This just in - we have ordered 9mm ammo that is available to purchase when you take a class - $25 for a box of 50.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best handgun to carry for self defense?
The short answer is any handgun that you can shoot well. Our Advance Carry Class covers this in depth.
Things to consider are:
1) Caliber - a .380 is considered the minimum for self-defense.
2) Size - small handguns are easier to conceal but can be harder to shoot accurately.
3) Budget
We recommend carrying the largest handgun that you can easily conceal.
In all of our classes we encourage participants to bring more than one handgun so they can try the different drills with their different guns and decide for themselves which one works best for them. We also have various handguns that participants can try or rent for the classes.
Since Oklahoma allows open carry is that a good idea?
I have often heard "open carry is for attention and concealed carry is for protection." Our instructors advocate that concealed carry is usually the best option for self defense. That being said - it does take more training and repetition to smoothly draw from concealment.
What is the best holster for carrying a handgun?
Our ComprehensiveCarry Class covers this subject in detail - holster selection and carry locations. Our instructors bring examples of both good and bad carry holsters and explain each.
Our instructors have carried handguns for decades on their jobs both in a duty holster and in an undercover capacity. They have learned from trial and error what works and what doesn't.
In summary avoid the cheap plastic holsters (especially for open carry). I have seen people open carrying at stores wearing a cheap plastic holster holding a $1000+ handgun. They have have no idea that a bad guy can very easily break the plastic and have themselves a new loaded handgun.
Also avoid holsters with a retention button near the trigger - this reinforces the trigger finger accessing the trigger area when not on target - it is a bad accident waiting to happen.
